Do I need a medical ID? A simple checklist
A medical ID is a small, visible piece of information you carry on your body. It is there for one situation: when you can't explain your health yourself. Whether you need one depends on your health, your medication and how you live.
Ask yourself these questions
- Do I take medication that changes how I should be treated? Blood thinners are a common example.
- Do I have a condition that can suddenly make me confused, drowsy or unconscious? Think of diabetes with low blood sugar episodes, or epilepsy.
- Do I have an implant or device? For example a pacemaker.
- Do I have a serious allergy to a medicine? Such as penicillin.
- Am I often on my own? Walking, cycling, travelling or living alone.
If you answered yes to one or more, a medical ID is worth considering. If you are unsure, ask your doctor whether your condition or medication is something others should know in an emergency.
Why on your body and not just on your phone?
Medical info on a phone is useful, but it only helps if the phone is with you, charged, and someone knows where to look. A bracelet, necklace or keychain works without any of that.
Keep it simple
The most useful ID is one you actually wear every day. Pick a style you like, so it stays on.
