The medical alert symbol explained
Many medical IDs show a six-pointed star with a staff and a snake in the middle. It is known as the Star of Life.
What does it mean?
The Star of Life is widely used as a symbol for emergency medical services. The staff with the single snake in the centre is the Rod of Asclepius, an ancient symbol of medicine and healing.
Why is it on a medical ID?
It's instantly recognisable. Even from a distance, the symbol signals: this is medical information, take a look. That's why it appears on many of our bracelets, necklaces and keychains next to the engraved condition.
Colour
You'll see the symbol in different colours. Red is common on medical IDs because it stands out against metal.
